BLURB
On an isolated Texas ranch, Dr. Lucy cares for abandoned animals. The solitude allows her to avoid the people and places that remind her of the past. Not that any of the townsfolk care. In 1959, no one is interested in a woman doctor. Nor are they welcoming Calvin and Justin Bell, a newly arrived African American father and son.
When Pete Solomon, a neglected twelve-year-old boy, and Justin bring a wounded wolf-dog hybrid to Dr. Lucy, the outcasts soon find refuge in one another. Lucy never thought she’d make connections again, never mind fall in love. Pete never imagined he’d find friends as loyal as Justin and the dog. But these four people aren’t allowed to be friends, much less a family, when the whole town turns violently against them.
With heavy hearts, Dr. Lucy and Pete say goodbye to Calvin and Justin. But through the years they keep hope alive…waiting for the world to catch up with them.
REVIEW
I could kick myself for not reading any of Catherine Ryan Hyde’s books sooner due to how amazing a writer she is. Say Goodbye For Now, might be the first book of her’s that I have read, but it will not be the last. From the beginning the plot catches hold of you making it impossible to put down the book since the need to know what will happen next will overtake you. Furthermore, the book contains remarkably developed characters. As a reader, you go through their struggles with them such as overcoming adversity, bigotry and learning that sometimes you have to wait for society to catch up with what you already know is right.
Within the hatred that took place during that time the author did a beautiful job of constructing a group of strangers into a family worth fighting for but, the question is will Dr. Lucy and Calvin’s relationship sustain the test of time? Pete is my favorite character due to an ingrained integrity and huge heart that he surely did not learn at home from his father; at the young age of twelve, he knows better than most adults. Going along for the ride as he grows into an adult is fascinating. This is a very hard review for me to write because I do not want to give any part of the book away. I encourage you to pick up a copy of Say Goodbye For Now. It is a must read for anyone who enjoys a book about inner strength and determination.

There is one last thing I would like to mention though this book takes place in 1959 and yes some things have changed. Such as, it is not frowned upon being a woman doctor and you can marry anyone you would like. One thing did stay the same, bigotry. It just focuses on a different group of humans and you would think people would have evolved past the differences in others by now. Again, I can’t stress how important it is for people to read this book especially now that we are going into 2017, no matter who the person is they can be a bigot.
